How to Sign In to Patched YouTube and YouTube Music with MicroG RE
Why patched YouTube and YouTube Music can't sign in on their own, what MicroG RE does, which file to install, and how to get your Google account working.
You install patched YouTube, tap your profile picture to sign in, and nothing happens, or you get an error about Google Play Services. That isn't a broken build. Patched Google apps can't use Google's own sign-in, and the fix is a small companion app called MicroG RE.
Why sign-in needs an extra app
Google apps hand account sign-in, push notifications and a few other jobs to Google Play Services. Play Services checks the signature of the app asking for help. A patched YouTube is re-signed by whoever built it, so Play Services won't talk to it.
Morphe's patches for YouTube and YouTube Music include a GmsCore support patch. It points those jobs at microG, an open-source replacement for Play Services that runs next to the real one. MicroG RE is the microG build the Morphe project maintains for its patched apps. It doesn't replace or remove Google Play Services; both stay installed.
Which apps on this site need it
- YouTube and YouTube Music, patched with the official Morphe patches.
- Google Photos, whose community bundle also applies a GmsCore support patch by default.
Other patched apps that don't use Google sign-in, like Reddit or Instagram, don't need it. If an app page doesn't mention MicroG, you can skip this.
Step by step
- Download MicroG RE from the releases page on GitHub. There are six variants. The plain
microg-<version>.apkis universal and works everywhere. Thearm64-v8afiles are less than half the size and fine for most modern phones. Thenoiconfiles behave identically but hide the launcher icon; you then open MicroG from its entry in the system app list. - Install it like any other APK. Install it before or after the patched app, the order doesn't matter.
- Let it run in the background. Open MicroG once and go through any prompts it shows, especially the one about battery optimisation. If Android is allowed to kill MicroG, notifications from patched YouTube arrive late or not at all.
- Sign in from the patched app. Open YouTube or YouTube Music and tap sign in. The Google login screen now comes from MicroG. Log in with your Google account as usual, including two-step verification.
If it still doesn't work
- Use MicroG RE, not another microG build. Other microG builds can use a different package name, and the patched app then can't find them.
- Stuck on a blank sign-in screen: clear MicroG's storage in Android's app settings, open it once, and try again.
- "This browser or app may not be secure": Google occasionally rejects logins from microG for a while, often on brand-new accounts. Waiting a bit, or signing in on a different network, usually gets past it.
- No notifications: check that MicroG is excluded from battery optimisation, and that the patched app itself is allowed to send notifications.
You only need to set this up once. When you install a newer patched YouTube later, MicroG and your login stay in place, as long as you don't uninstall MicroG in between.
